We started out by exploring hierarchy through contrast, experimenting with different stroke weights, line spacing, margins, and scale. I took what I learned from those exercises to create a few potential layouts, then tested them out with various color palettes and images.
After I chose one image and layout, I refined and revisited it, adjusting stroke weight, placement, and even editing shadows on the photo so the text would stand out better. I changed the heading of the poster to be a shortened form of the Ten Evenings tagline—it’s more eye-catching that way, and will interest people even if they don’t know what “Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures” does.

This project was one of my first experiences working with typographical hierarchy, and I learned through this process that hierarchy often works best with just one or two modifications to a piece of plain text. I also learned the value of iteration and thumbnailing, and plan to incorporate that more into my process moving forward.
